Choices | Daily Mindful Moment #16

What choices did you make today?

I talk a lot about choices on the podcast, and yet, I still find myself forgetting I have choices.

After all, some choices are easier to make than others. Some choices are easier to change than others.

For example, when it comes to the choices I make about my work, it feels easier to make the best choices for me and to use creativity in my decision-making process. The people I work with help to encourage this and that makes a big difference. It is also a new path that I am walking for myself, so I am not weighed down by expectations of what my work should look like. On the other hand, I find it more challenging to make different choices when it comes to how I interact with my family. If I feel no pressure from previously set patterns in my work, then my family is where I feel all the pressure from previously set patterns.

I find myself falling into old patterns that don't serve me and I struggle to get out of them when it comes to my family. I think this is the case for most people. Family is a social world that feels really difficult to change. This is because the social world of my nuclear family (my mom, dad, brother, and me) does not exist in a bubble, it is influenced by the families that came before us-- my aunts and uncles, cousins, grandparents, great-grandparents, great-great-grandparents, and so on and so on forever and ever.

I have to take a step back, take a moment to pause and reflect, and really think about what I could do differently in the future. It doesn't come easy, either. I have to remind myself of my choices all the time. I am hopeful that one day I will be able to make different choices and start new, healthier patterns for my family because I have seen myself make new choices and patterns in other areas of my life.

Keep reminding yourself that you have choices. Spend time thinking about new choices you could make. Maybe you don't get it right every time. Maybe you don't actually start living out the new choices you want to make making right now. Maybe you really struggle to think about these things.

It's all good.

You have choices. And you have time. You are on a journey right now, so be where you are.
